匚尺丨ㄒㄒ乇尺乙 – first ever animated film utilizing DALL·E to design ALL the visuals

On DALL·E’s release anniversary, a very talented artist, creative director, and a ‘critterz’ anthropologist Chad Nelson together with Native Foreign TV production company made one dream come true, and it was Chad’s: first-ever animated film utilizing AI as the only visuals concept creator. That’s some anniversary celebration!

‚The film utilized DALL·E to design every single visual used — every character, every background… basically, the entire Critterz world! These images were then handed to a talented team of Emmy award-winning animators in order to bring it all to LIFE!’

The film is an animated science documentary turned comedy that introduces a mysterious and unexplored forest inhabited by an unknown, yet very outspoken little ‘Critterz’. It’s a brilliant, funny, and well-executed showcase of how human creativity can adopt and push AI tools into the realm of storytelling and animation. Big ups for the Attenborough’s ‘brother’ narrative. Amazing work!

How many creatures are there? Well, as the author claims he created over a 100 of them! If it wasn’t for the animation, they could as well be real.

‘I had a vision for a cast of charming woodland critters, each oozing with personality and emotional nuance, Nelson said. His characters range from ‘a red furry monster looks in wonder at a burning candle’ to ‘a striped hairy monster shakes its hips dancing underneath a disco ball,’ each crafted to capture the most human thing of all: feelings.’

‘DALL·E is the most advanced paint brush I’ve ever used,; Nelson says. ‘As mind-blowing and amazing as DALL·E is, like the paint brush, it too must be guided by the artist. It still needs that creative spark, that lightbulb in the mind to innovate—to create that something from nothing.’

The backstage full movie is yet to come, but for now, you can check out the snippet here. Looking forward to seeing ‘the kitchen’! In the meantime enjoy the show.
